A Revisit with Our Town’s David Peck and His NOLA Influences for Spring…

I always like to have a seasonal touch base with David Peck to see what he has chosen for his CROP line each time. So I dropped into Tootsies where he was showing his complete line to take a look. For Spring/Summer 2012, his collection titled “Crescent Rising” reflects on a near-by city that is a favorite to visit for so many of us, New Orleans, the Crescent City. His artistic collaboration is with a photographer that is also a familiar face to many of us in Houston, Daniel Ortiz, a native of NOLA. From Daniel’s photos of this rich, colorful city, David has taken and created unique, one-of-a-kind prints such as the bold plumes of birds that decorate Commander’s Palace into a special wallpaper print. Also, the Spanish Moss from the great trees of Audubon Park, the vibrant colors of Mardi Gras and one of my favorite prints…inspired by the inside of a Zapp’s Potato Chip bag done in a bright citrus yellow and grey print.(shown on rack & below)

Maginnis Dress in Canary, 100% silk crepe de chine, $545; Fearn Dress in Chips Papillon, 100% organic printed cotton sateen, $495

The translations are subtle and uniquely David and I find the styling this season to be simple, high-styled and more sophisticated.  His prints are his trademark and there are many styles to choose from in the new collection. As an owner of three of his basic silk dresses that he continues to repeat each season in cap and three-quarter sleeves, the color selections are endless from neutrals to bright spring hues and always an easy pick-up to wear to any occasion.

Jessie Top in Canary, 100% silk crepe de chine, $195,Sanders Dress in Blanche/Yellow multi, 100% organic cotton and handwoven silk, $525; Perrine Dress in Oxford Blue, combination of organic cotton and hemp, $195, Ruby Bow tie in Spanish Moss, 100% organic printed cotton sateen, Retail: $40

For those of you who are unfamiliar, CROP, which stands for Creative Opportunities, is part of David’s design approach begun in 2010, where he works with a network of artists and each season collaborates on a design package with one of these as his inspiration for the collection. All are sustainable, eco-friendly materials, majority of fabrics produced in the U.S., all selected for their durability and low impact on the environment.

Delphine Dress in White Check, handwoven cotton and silk, $495; Janvier Dress in Spanish Moss, 100% organic printed cotton sateen, $465

A portion of the sales each season is donated to a charity tied to that inspiration.  For S/S 12, revenue will be donated to the Gulf Restoration Network (GRN) empowering people in that region to protect and restore their natural resources.
