Houston Is In Bloom…It’s Azalea Trail Time!

Cathy Cleary and Camille Patton, Azalea Trail Chairpersons

This is my favorite time of year in Houston. There is nothing more beautiful than this city when it becomes  “bloom town,” and all of the Azaleas here are at their fullest.  The color that takes over this city is awesome and the timing is right now for one of Houston’s iconic city events, The Azalea Trail, being sponsored for its 78th year by the River Oaks Garden Club.

Taking the helm of this year’s event are chairs, Cathy Cleary and Camille Patton.  The dates are Friday, March 8 through Sunday, March 10 from 11:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. daily.  This year’s event includes (4) River Oaks homes, River Oaks Garden Club Center, Bayou Bend and Rienzi.  Tickets can be purchased individually at each location for $5 or 6 tickets for $20.  For more details see the brochure below or check www.riveroaksgardenclub.org or call 713-523-2483.  Publicity chairs are A Bientot’s Betty Newton and Carolyn Light.

A special treat for this year’s Azalea Trail Is the publication for the 5th time by Master Gardener, Lynn Herbert of the book, “A Garden Book for Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast.”  This book first published in 1929 by Will Hogg, brother of Ima, was last published in 1989. This updated version includes such modernization as organic gardening.

  1. I love this time of year. Azaleas are so nostalgic for me because they remind me of my grandmother’s flower beds and how proud she was of her azalea bushes each spring. (I also love the fashion/beauty tie-in…NARS Schiap is a must-have shade!!)
