I Finally Made it to Jonathan’s the Rub and I Couldn’t be Happier About It!

Jonathan's The Rub 4

Newest location for Jonathan’s the Rub, soon to open on first floor of this commercial building on Gaylord & Bunker Hill

About Jonathan’s the Rub’s New Digs:  Since opening their doors in 2008, Jonathan’s will more than double their current seating size.  Moving to a 5,600 square foot, free-standing restaurant space at the intersection of Bunker Hill and Gaylord Drive in Memorial City, just a few minutes away from his current location. The original footprint began at 32 seats and has since expanded to 85 seats, the new space will offer a total seating capacity of 225, including dining room, bar area and outdoor patio.

“This opportunity to grow our business truly is a dream come true!” Levine said. “We are very grateful to all of our loyal customers who have made this possible and look forward to being able to do what we love in a bigger space that will allow us to share our food with a larger audience.”

Jonathan’s critically acclaimed restaurant has received many awards including, “Houston Best Burger,” “Houston’s Best Lobster” , “Best of Houston” and “Best Hidden Treasure” from the Houston Press, plus many, many more.

Current Jonathan’s the Rub restaurant, the “hidden treasure of Memorial”, makes you beg for more…..only if you leave your calorie counter at home for the day or night!

Jonathan Levine, comes to Houston from Brooklyn, N.Y. where he hung with all of the Italian boys (hence he makes amazing meatballs, plus I had to love him, he felt like a cousin!) He then was in the food business on Cape Cod, which is why he is very proud of his lobster and his lobster taco is a “to die for” item on his menu.  Family brought him to us in Houston and he has been here ever since. Starting out as a catering business and with his kids on board with him, has opened “The Rub”!  The funny thing to know here is that his name The Rub, came rom a line from Shakespeare, and it was after he had a restaurant by that name that he found it necessary to develop a “rub”, which he uses and sells by the jar. It has a smokey paprika taste that will put some spice in your life!  The meal was all that I had hoped it would be and since we went for lunch, he insists that we make a dinner trip there, as that is when he feels he shines. I can hardly wait to bring my hubby and make a night of it.

Dining with Jonathan Levine at his namesake restaurant in Memorial area…Julie Bortnick and myself, Roz Pactor, who just finished his amazing selections for us that had us craving more!

So, if I were to guess, you have been to Jonathan’s the Rub , and loved it and told all of your friends about it……which is why getting a seat at this very popular restaurant can be a challenge!  I, on the other hand, had never been there, and found out about this must go-to-restaurant, while attending an unrelated coffee meeting.  Since I seemed to be the only person at the table that had not had the pleasure of experiencing this restaurant which everyone was raving about, a trip to this out-of-the way haunt, “hidden treasure in Memorial” as Houston Press has called it, became a must on my to do list.  Well, we finally made it there last week…..Julie Bortnick and I had lunch with Jonathan, the man, who is also owner and head chef and charming host….and what a treat that was!

  1. Can’t wait to go…have heard nothing but rave reviews and now it must be offical since you’ve given it your “stamp of approval”

  2. Its like you read my mind! You seem to know a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something.
I think that you can do with a few pics to drive the message home a bit, but other than that, this is excellent blog.

A great read. I’ll definitely be back.
