STAG (provisions), a mainstay men’s store, in the  Austin market,  made it’s way to Houston this past May.  It was scheduled to launch in a storm, literally, but that got postponed due to that crazy weather Houston was having. It was rescheduled, unfortunately for me, as all I heard and read was how super and utterly hip the party was…..at a time that I was out of the country.  So yes, I missed the 200+ people that included many hip and modern guys in our town that made it to the launch party but the good news for us is that we got a private tour last week, that was all our own, where we were able to visit this newest go-to-place for the edgy guy with a classic root!

The owners of this modern boutique with a haberdashery under lining, was started by co-founders Steve Shuck and Don Weir in Austin in 2009. It opened its second store in Venice, California last September and Dallas the following November.  The new Houston location is 3,500 square feet and is located at 2614 Westheimer Rd. (corner of Kirby and Westheimer) with neighbors that include Sloan-Hall, Dry Bar and ARMANDO’S in a River Oaks Center, across the street from Tootsies and West Ave. complex. Similar to their other stores, they will offer their signature rugged yet refined style while using elements of the preexisting space to stay true to the neighborhood. (For inner loopers, you may recall this space as the old Buffalo Hardware Store, I sure do!)

“Our Houston location will feature STAG staples like Ralph Lauren RRL (denim) exclusively, Hamilton Shirt  Co., ( local shirt manufacturer that also features Lyle Lovett for Hamilton), Alex Mills, Red Wing Boots, Filson , Gitman Bros, Moscot, Weiss (watches), and more, said Don Weir, co-founder of STAG.  When I asked Arvy, Manager of store, who their target audience was, other than the edgier, classic guy….he won my heart when he said, “You know that easy guy with a laid back quality. Somewhere between Steve McQueen and Willie Nelson,” now who wouldn’t love that!!!?

STAG’s unique and inviting retail space features a precisely edited yet curated blend of apparel, and accessories. Many featuring local craftsmen.

As early Fall items are hitting the store, this modern leather jacket is just a tasting of what is to come.

I loved the haberdashery feel of these early Fall items, presented in a clean, put together manner for the modern gentleman.  Many accessories, not shown here, such as shoes, leather cases, all fit into this fashion category.

One of the most explosive, new businesses for men happening now is the growth of Men’s Toiletries. The eclectic, modern guy has a good selection of grooming essentials to choose from for himself, or for a unique gift offering for a friend.

In Closing

This is what the co-owners had to say about their Houston location….

We’ve had Houston on our mind for some time now and were really just waiting for the right location to become available,” said Steve Shuck. “When we heard of the Buffalo Hardware space opening up, we knew we had our spot.”

“Over time, we’ll also introduce new brands and exclusive collections that make sense for this market. We’ve done great business both online and in Austin with Houston shoppers over the years, so we’re looking forward to opening up shop in another strong Texas market and servicing the Houston community, says Don Weir.
