One of the most exciting and highly anticipated fashion events to come to Houston in recent times is the upcoming exhibition known as The Glamour and Romance of Oscar de la Renta, opening to the public on October 8 at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. This exhibit is a celebration of the illustrious life and career of one of the most influential fashion designers of our time.  This collaboration will be available to view at the Museum from October 8, 2017 to January 28, 2018 and has been curated by Andre Leon Talley, former American editor-at-large for Vogue magazine and lifelong friend of the designer in collaboration with Museum curators and private collectors.

The collection of this award-winning designer whose career spanned more than five decades will highlight the recurring themes throughout his design years, including the significant impact of Spain, Russia, China, Japan and the garden on his designs.  There will be more details of this must-see exhibit as we are closer to the opening day and have had the chance to preview this amazing collection.

Because of my much anticipated excitement for the upcoming collection which will also include a whirlwind of Oscar-related events beginning October 2 through the 8th, including private appearances by the new co-creative team at several events.  There will also be  very special momentos and Oscar de la Renta items which can be purchased in the Museum Store as well as a Trunk Show of the designers current Oscar Resort Collection which will be available at TOOTSIES on October 5, 6, 7.

All of this excitement in the air surrounding the upcoming Oscar exhibit  has heightened my curiosity at the progression  of the ODLR brand’s newest co-creative directors/designers, former proteges and top design assistants of Oscar, the man.   Founders of their own collection, the very well-received Monse, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia recently showed their 2nd collection, Spring 2018 newest designs and fresh direction for the Oscar de la Renta brand at Sotheby’s Galleries in New York for NYFW.  As many new designers that are working for heritage brands such as ODLR are experiencing,  they are looking for a balance of how much of the old to honor the founder with how to modernize that legacy….not an easy task.

The collection which took much inspiration from pop-art is a combination of daywear that is younger and different from the Oscar of old, but an evening wear collection that exhibits much of the glamour and beautiful gowns that Oscar, the designer, was famous for and for which they younger designers learned very well from their master.
