The Chic Sheet’s Top Ten Favorites on Oscar Night…

Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford White Dress & Cape w/6” diamond cuff from Anna Hu and Jessica Chastain in McQueen Couture and Harry Winston Jewels

From a Fashion-for-the-Awards Show perspective, Oscars usually have it all and are the perfect crescendo to a great Red Carpet season.  However, I must say that last Sunday night just was a little lackluster and felt much more subdued for me.  The celebs and their gowns that were outstanding, were not in great numbers but were truly that, such as Gwyneth Paltrow in her Tom Ford Dress and Cape, who kept tweeting that she was on her way and that she was in Tom Ford!  Not sure if the LA traffic was holding her back but once she arrived, you could see why it would have been everyone’s loss had she and her ensemble been missed on the Red Carpet.

Not only was Gwyneth exceptional looking, but she was also the best example out there of the number one trend of the evening. It was a Hot White/Neutral  Night as seen on Rooney Mara, Cameron Diaz, Octavia Spencer, Jennifer Lopez, Mila Jovovich as the best of the group.

My other favorite was Jessica Chastain in her McQueen couture embellished black gown.  Although I did not feel that black owned the evening, there were a few good examples on the Carpet.  I felt the evening was about White/Neutral and Colors such as Red, Coral, Emerald or Deep Green or the shades from Midnight Blue to the  Blue/Grey gown from Armani Prive.

The trends of the evening were:

  • Colors I’ve mentioned above (White #1, Color #2, Metallics & Black, equally #3)
  • Strapless was the silhouette of the evening
  • Peplums, both structured or softly tiered
  • Some sparkle in the fabrics, but less beading than at past Red Carpet evenings, Gold was the top metallic of the night
  • (stunning in Stacey Kieblers’ Marchesa and Meryl Streeps’ Lanvin)
  • Jewelry was more precious in quality (ala Tiffany’s, Harry Winston, Neal Lane).  Lots of diamonds and much more classic & understated than other shows.
  • Accessories in general were underplayed.
  • Bangs could be back in all shapes and lengths.

  1. Did not love Penelope Cruz’s whole look, the hair put me so far off…and I wore that dress to my 6th grade ballroom dancing party…exactly that dress!
I thought Gwyneth so owned the night, actually only topped by our very own Phoebe Tudor the night before at Discovery Green…maybe the best look ever…she was so totally fabulous!

    1. Only you Leisa, would have had that gown, an Armani at that for your sixth grade ballroom dancing party, LOL, must have been some party…….I loved the color, the dress and how she looked! As for Phoebe, I didn’t see her but she never looks less than perfectly stylish so I’m sure you are right and no surprise that we have plenty of fashion right her in Houston!

  2. In reviewing your Top Ten Selections, I too felt you “missed the boat” on excluding Milla Jovovich’s off-shoulder white beaded gown. She was absolutely stunning! No one watching in our crowd missed her….breathtaking.

    1. I’m sorry Jo, but Milla just doesn’t do it for me. The Elie Saab dress was beautiful but just not a fan……guess that’s what makes life interesting!
