Fall(ing) for Denim

Denim, like most fashion trends, comes and goes in cycles. Personally denim is my favorite thing to wear,  because it goes with everything and can easily transition from season to season. You can really wear it all year round! This fall we are stuck in the 90s (in a good way)! It’s Alyssa here chatting about a few of the prominent trends in denim this fall and how to wear them:

1. Cropped Flare Jeans

Look for a crop that hits just above the ankle – this is the most flattering length. They are perfect for showing off a great pair of shoes, especially boots for the (hopefully!) cooler weather we’ll be seeing soon. Look no further than Alexa Chung for your cropped flare inspiration – she does it well!

2. Patchwork

Both on jeans and jackets! Vetements (check them out here, they are incredible!) should be given a lot of credit for the rise in patchwork style jeans. They’ve become a staple for street style stars since Paris fashion week this past March, and many brands are following suit. My best tip is to make your patchwork denim the focus by keeping the rest of your outfit simple.

3. Old school denim

Think high waisted, vintage Levi style, rips, loose fit, and frayed edges. Definitely a grunge, 90s vibe. Stick to fitted basics on top, tucked in, to show off your figure or pair with a blazer for a menswear vibe. I could wear these all day, everyday!

4. Exaggerated wide-leg trousers

While not necessarily a part of the 90s vibe we are seeing in denim, this is definitely a trend brought back from the past. They are probably the most universally flattering style of denim (which is why they continue to come back each season) and look great paired with tops tucked in to accentuate your waist. Go for a shoe with a heel or boot to make your legs look miles long!

5. “Novelty” Denim

Novelty denim (patches, pins, graphic prints, and bright colors) comes straight from the runway. It definitely leaves us with the feeling of nostalgia! The “cool girls” of all ages are wearing this trend.  Another side to this trend is to DIY it – make it a project and add some personality!

6. Double Denim

Always a favorite of mine – I love a good chambray and jeans combo. This fall though, its all about the return of the denim jacket! Here are a few tips for pulling off this trend: pick different shades of denim to pair together (dark and light, black and dark blue, etc.), break up the denim with other fabrics and colors, make sure your pieces aren’t too tight, and please DON’T add denim accessories.
