With 2020 full of twists and turns and highs and lows, we find great joy in anything that brings about a sense of “normalcy.” After nearly half a year on lockdown, The Met has since been reopened and its Costume Institute show, ‘About Time: Fashion and Duration,’ has us reeling with excitement. The exhibition looks back at fashion from 1870 to the present day. “It explores how clothes generate temporal associations that conflate past, present, and future.” It takes place in two adjacent galleries and it’s organized around 60 minutes of fashion. “Each “minute” features a pair of garments, with the primary work representing the linear nature of fashion and the secondary work its cyclical character.”
What’s really even more interesting is that all of the garments are black except the final look, and that’s to put emphasis on the changes in silhouette. It ends with a beautiful piece which looks towards the future of fashion.
Designers in the exhibit include Marc Jacobs, Gianni Versace, Karl Lagerfeld, and many more.
