Last month, I was sitting at Makeup in LA listening to a panel of experts talk about Cosmetic Ingredient Trends.  They discussed what trends had run their course (goodbye, CBD) and which ones were on the rise.  There were several mentioned, i.e., microbiome focused products.  The experts agreed that while we still have much to learn in this area, this trend was only going to grow in the future.  The one trend that all experts agreed was very right now and here to stay was adaptogens.  Adapt-o-who??  Let’s dive in…

Adaptogens have been used for hundreds of years in Chinese and Aruyvedic medicine, but they are making a big splash in wellness circles right now.  So, what does it mean?  Adaptogens are super herbs, plants, even mushrooms that “adapt” to the skin’s stressors.   When consumed, they rebalance the body’s stress responses. In skincare, they are used to reduce the signs of stress in the skin, which translates to tired-looking, dull skin with increased fine lines.  My skin has been over-stressed since March 2020…anyone else?

When you are perusing the skincare aisle, look for these ingredients to know whether you have a true adaptogen based product in your hands…

Ashwagandha – known as Indian ginseng, this herb is said to have stress reducing, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and skin softening properties.

Indian Gooseberry – studies have shown that this increase collagen production and speeds up wound healing

Schisandra – this fruit-bearing vine helps to promote firmer looking skin.

Maca – known as Peruvian gingseng, helps boost collagen production and manage hormones, which could improve acne outbreaks.

Reishi Mushrooms – packed with beta-glucans, these mushrooms combat environmental stressors and tame inflammation.

Rhodiola Rosea – this superherb provides oxidative protection, reducing premature aging.

Triphala – a combination of three fruit-bearing trees, amalaki, bibhitaki and haritaki, triphala can be anti-inflammatory and capable of increasing collagen.

Now that you know what to look for, let’s cut to the chase.  Here are some of my favorite adaptogen skincare products:
