Bibhu Mohapatra’s Spring Collection for Fashion Houston Inspired and Dominated by Geometric Pattern

Bibhu Mohapatra’s Spring/Summer 2015 Collection is Dominated by this Black & White Geometric Print of “graphed-in” Circles…the Fabric was his Inspiration.

WhenBibhu Mohapatra showed his collection for the third time here on Night #3 of Fashion Houston, there was no question as to his theme and his inspiration for the collection….it was all in the details of this one fabric that the designer chose to dominate his collection. The mastery, however, was in the subtlety of his execution of the idea. This black & white geometric printed design was digitally printed as an all-over print or as a key element of a bigger design that incorporated pattern-mixing with florals and hard and soft fabrics.  It was even designed into a jacquard version and most dramatically taken to his evening looks as a subtle touch or a more glammed up beaded adaptation. It was truly something to see and expertly worked throughout most of the collection. I left the Wortham with that print on my mind but it was not until we visited each piece with the designer the next day at Elizabeth Anthony, that I truly appreciated the execution. Another subtlety of the collection was that he also took with him in designing the season, the spirit of British aristocrat, Nancy Cunnard, shipping heiress. This gave the clothes a deco vibe from the 1930’s, most definitely updated with a modern flair.

Newest News from Bibhu:  One could not recall his collection here without remembering some of the stand-out fur pieces that he presented on the runway. (please take note below of the creative design he has put into his furs). He was happy to share with me his newest venture which is a licensing agreement for doing a Fur Collection that will debut in its entirety for Fall 2015, which we will be seeing in NYFW in Feburary.  It will carry his name, be his designs but produced by a fur manufacturer, who is an expert in that business.  If the fur sampling he gave us was any indication, it should be spectacular and just the beginning of more such collaborations for him in the future.

For Bibhu it was his 3rd visit to Fashion Houston in its 5 yrs….when I asked him why so often he simply said because he “loves Houston” and does well here…sounds like Houston  women “love Bibhu” also!
