Fashion in the Time of Covid Featuring…Space Mammal

Through the past year we’ve seen designers, brands, and business owners large and small all impacted by the pandemic. Unanticipated trends have emerged to accommodate our new “essential” accessories for daily life. Intrigued by these breakout styles, we reached out to a few stand-out designers to learn more about their creative brands inspired by the need to stay safe, but fashionably.

The timeliest style to hit the market is most definitely Space Mammal, which launched a cozy line of reimagined leisurewear early January by Los Angeles-based fine sculpture artist David Grieco. The sculptor came up with the idea last March as he was battling his own case of COVID-19. With a desire to stay as comfortable as possible while isolating in his own home and a priority to constantly “mask up” and keep his family safe, the artist decided to combine two of his everyday tools – a pull-up mask within a hoodie… a Face Hoodie!

“As a sculptor, my mind works very functionally,”said David Grieco on designing the uniqueness of Space Mammal. “When I see things moving, I see three-dimensionally. Everything has to work together to make the components work. I’m basically sculpting fabric.”

Grieco describes his Space Mammal sweatshirt as “forward-thinking fashion” that camouflages as a cool piece of apparel. When the Space Mammal Face Hoodie mask is pulled taut, tension is distributed over four different areas in a six-component face mask. Space Mammal is a crossing of paths for multiple forms of art, including Grieco’s love of sculpture and flexibility of fabric. As a space enthusiast, Grieco came up with the clever Space Mammal name as a way to unite all beings as the same ‘mammals’ in the universe. He proudly included his family in the entire process to be part of building this new venture.

So, what’s next for Space Mammal? Grieco answered, “all of the unknown is what I’m so hopeful for,” and we cannot wait to see what that might be! Needless to say, we are hooked and look forward to seeing what comes next for this fashionable, functional, and energy-fueled brand!
