Neiman Marcus’ big move to the Galleria in early 1969 was the biggest story in retail that this city had seen. It moved from its Downtown Houston location on Main Street to Westheimer & Post Oak as an anchor for this new center that was going to be built as an attachment to the store. It was called The Galleria and what has come from all of that is what we know today. For me it was also the beginning of my career in Retailing as I was just at the most premature start of doing what would be my life’s work and Neiman’s hired me for the move in and then later mentored me for my entire college life in that building. They then sponsored me to go on to the very prestigious Tobe Coburn School in New York City. So, needless to say being there for it’s big Golden Celebration was very special for me….as it represented big beginnings for them in our city and for me as well.
Mr. Stanley Marcus was the retailing genius that took the family business to new heights with his amazing instincts, great taste and creative ideas. No one that worked for Neiman’s in those days or for many years after will forget his “elevator meetings”. Keeping it all in the family back then, it was his brother Lawrence Marcus that was our Store Manager for those first years of the Houston store which has remained one of Neiman Marcus’ top branches.
