Quarantine Hair S.O.S….In Search of Some Temporary Help

As sheltering at home has been happening, our hair color has been growing out.....and its not been pretty!!

Quarantine hair

Editor’s Note: I know I am not alone….if anything I’m late talking about it here but it has been a constant talking point of just about every Zoom call, or messages with many of my friends. There has been desperation in their voices of late, as we are clocking at six weeks of sheltering in place and are dreaming of the day we can actually see our beloved single color hair again! (Ceron how I miss you!!) Chelsi has done her research on some quick fixes (usually just a drugstore pick-up) to get your through and here you go……..

I know I have said this before but I have to say it again…these are crazy times.  What has been unexpected, as a retail marketer by trade and very interesting to watch, are the shopping trends.  Each week, a new product category bubbles up to the top as the most important thing we need and panic ensues.

First, it was hand sanitizer, then toilet paper (why??). In my house, we actually bought a new set of flatware because we were running the dishes all-the-time! While most of those panic items can now be found, the rubber is starting to hit the road for a certain commodity.  Hair color!  I desperately need my hair colored and I know I am not alone in this debacle!  Roots are showing.  Greys are appearing.  More ponytails, hats and headbands are making their debut.  While everyone is appreciating going sans makeup and turning up their skincare routine, all of the sudden it hit….we didn’t want our natural hair back.  That was not part of this quarantine deal!

While some states are slowing opening up, Texas isn’t quite there yet.  I know some salons and stylists are having Zoom calls with their clients on how to color their hair.  Some are dropping hair color kits direct to customer’s doors in order for them to at least have their hair return to normal.  There are also a lot of great products out there that can temporarily or permanently color and highlight your hair.  And hey, since we are stuck inside, this is also a great time to be bold and try something new.  Read on to see a few of my favorites.

 L’Oreal Magic Root Cover Up

This is the perfect quick fix to apply right before your next video call.  It is a spray, which can be a little messy at first, but is a very affordable way to cover your roots immediately. It is formulated without ammonia, peroxide, or synthetic dyes and lasts until your next shampoo.

Madison Reed

For at-home all over permanent hair color, Madison Reed is a great choice because their product is free from harsh chemicals – no ammonia, parabens, resorcinol, PPD, phthalates, gluten, SLS, and titanium dioxide.  They also have a thorough quiz that you can take on their website that helps you choose the right shade for you plus they give you a 2nd best choice as well.

Color Wow Root Cover Up

This 7-time Allure Best of Beauty product is another easy one to use.  It is a powder that you simply brush on your greys or dark roots.  When I am extra stressed (like these days), my hair falls out leaving me with thinning gaps along my forehead.  This is perfect to use along the hairline to fill in those gaping holes.

Rita Hazan Root Concealer Touch Up Stick

If you prefer a creamy stick for your instant touch ups, this is for you.  Containing Castor Seed Oil and Sunflower Seed Wax, it glides on gently into the hair and is easy to blend. This also pulls double duty and can be used for your eyebrows as well…bonus!

dpHue Color Touch Up Spray

Saved this one for last because it takes a little more precision onyour part but it is worth the effort.  It has 2 nozzles – one small one that targets specific areas and one larger one that is better for stray greys throughout your hair. Formulated without parabens, sulfates, phthalates, gluten, and silicone, this dries quickly and lasts until you wash it out.

So how have you handled this hair crisis? OK, maybe it isn’t a crisis, but definitely something that is top of mind (or head) for us all.  Comment below with your favorite products and plan while we wait patiently for our favorite salons to open again.
