RSVP Ready….Holiday Jewelry Trends

A take on steppin' up holiday glam by one of our town's top models who takes it from the runway to party life

As the Holidays are in full swing and winter has finally arrived, bringing with it a chill in the air and a Facebook inbox full of holiday party invitations. We, here at MRG, love this time of the year because there’s always a reason to get dressed up! Jewelry may not be the first thing we reach for when it gets cold, but accessorizing during the winter is totally do-able! Don’t be afraid to put a necklace on under your scarf, earrings under those ear muffs, and perhaps throw a ring or two over your gloves. Then, when you arrive at your destination, peel off your warm outer layers to reveal your sparkling inside! This season you can expect to see unabashedly, bold and in-your-face classics, as well as a newer trend that takes the tinsel all the way to the top of your head. There is no lack of glamour this season and we are so excited for it! So, in preparation of those RSVPs, here’s what you need in your jewelry box:

Chunky Chains

This is a trend that has carried over from the fall runways. Gone are the delicate chains of the spring and summer, instead replaced by heavy metal, oversized chains. Although this trend can be made elegant, as is evident on the JW Anderson runway, try stacking chain necklaces, bracelets, and rings for a taste of hip-hop rock look that I love. Mix your metals, too! Gold and silver are both welcome here. So, layer on the chunky chains and unleash your inner rapper…gift wrapper that is!

Revered Rhinestones

I know we’ve all been wearing rhinestone jewelry during the holidays since the beginning of time…and with good reason! Rhinestones are festive! Designers like Christian Siriano have turned the not-so-humble rhinestone’s sparkle up to the max this season. Your go-to chandelier earrings from last season are still invited to the party, but pair them with other rhinestone pieces to really rival the disco ball! By all means, if you’ve got ‘em flaunt ‘em, but as they say, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but rhinestones are a girl’s wallet’s best friend.” (No? Just me?)

Elongated Earrings

Make a statement with earrings that cascade down to your shoulders and beyond! You can keep it simple with a single dangling strand or go for a more substantial style like the seemingly endless rows of hoops and tassels shown on the Prabal Gurung runway. This trend is ideal for everyone because it makes the neck look longer and draws the eye to the collarbone; quite a sensual part of a woman! The more length, the merrier!

Playful Pearls

Pearls are timeless; They’ll never be “out.” They’ve adorned generations of women…but these aren’t your grandma’s pearls. This season, pearls have been given a playful edge by way of choker necklaces and huge hoops. Designer Emilia Wickstead took an uber feminine pearl bow earring and made it fit for a rockstar. And the best part? Pearls go with everything! I like to wear a couple of pearl necklaces with a t-shirt, jeans, and a leather moto jacket. Try one of these unconventional styles and break away from tradition…..have fun, it’s the holidays after all!

Fancy Follicles

I don’t know about you, but my hair gets incredibly prone to static in the winter. Throwing on a beanie or a hat doesn’t always go with my outfit, though. “Hair jewelry,” as I’ve come to call it, has given me a way to tame staticky flyaways while still looking chic. Plus, this trend is oh-so-fun! You’ll feel like a (super fashionable) kid again when you don these gigantic barrettes, bedazzled hair pins, and magnificent headbands. Pantene’s got nothing on this shiny hair!
