A Heartfelt Italian Affair: Celebrating Culture and Community at the ICCC Luncheon

ICCC Luncheon 2023

Last week’s Italian Cultural & Community Center (ICCC) Fall Luncheon was more than just an event. It was a heartfelt celebration of culture, community, and a strong connection to our Italian roots. As someone deeply involved in the Italian community, this luncheon held immense emotional significance for me, and I couldn’t have been prouder to be a part of it. In case you didn’t know, October is Italian Heritage Month, so the timing felt especially appropriate. Also the Fall weather added a touch of magic to the day as over 300 guests gathered at the River Oaks Country Club.

It all began when Erika Myers, its Executive Director, took the stage to explain the ICCC’s noble mission – to advance, celebrate, and preserve Italian culture and heritage. It’s always heartwarming to see how dedicated the organization is to keeping our rich traditions alive. The Consul General of Italy, Mauro Lorenzini, also addressed the audience and expressed his deep appreciation for the commitment shown by the attendees. The amazing Luncheon Chairs Lesha Elsenbrook and Ginger Niemann managed to raise over $185,000 in support of the community! These moments of cultural unity reminded us all of the importance of maintaining these precious connections to our heritage.

One of the most memorable moments was the opening performance by soprano Krista Pape, a student of opera, who enchanted the crowd with a breathtaking rendition of “Sempre Libera” from La Traviata. This mesmerizing start reinforced the purpose of the ICCC’s annual luncheon which is benefiting scholarships. Krista left everyone spellbound! Owen Conflenti, the Master of Ceremonies and a familiar face from KPRC 2 morning anchor, kept the energy high throughout the event.

The most touching part of the luncheon for me was when my brother, Steve Tyrell, and I were honored by the I.C.C.C and shared the stage. I spoke about my personal involvement with the Italian community, paid tribute to the many Italian visionaries who came before me and made their mark on our city. I also shared stories from my recent trip to Italy, where I connected with the special small town with the very soil from which my ancestors originated in Sicily and shared the beautiful experience of visiting my homeland. It was an emotional day for me. Steve, with his trademark charm, took to the stage to deliver a heartfelt thank you to everyone present. He also treated us to a live performance of “Bella Notte” (a song he sang in the video version of Disney’s “Lady and the Tramp”). The entire room was captivated by his soulful performance.

The Italian Cultural & Community Center Fall Luncheon was a celebration of heritage, culture, and the beautiful connections that bind us. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating our roots, and it left a lasting impact on everyone in the room. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a heartwarming and memorable gathering.

Preston Antonini, General Manager of Neiman Marcus and our Fashion Show Sponsor, kicked off the fashion show in style by introducing spectacular fashions that showcased elegant Italian designs. Models graced the runway in mesmerizing Italian fall fashions, and the highlight of it all was when the show finale featured all models sporting none other than bold Red Glasses as a delightful and spirited gesture to me……..all conceptualized by our very talented fashion show producer and my good friend, Jeanne Ruberti. It was a great surprise for me and for the entire audience and the most fun way to end such a great program……thank you, Jeanne for a most memorable moment!

To everyone involved, thank you for making this luncheon a beautiful, emotional, and unforgettable experience. It’s amazing to see the heart of Italian heritage beat strong when we come together to celebrate it!

With love and gratitude,

Roz
