On May 11, 2023, I had the privilege of attending the Holocaust Museum Houston’s annual Lyndon Baines Johnson Moral Courage Award Dinner. It was an inspiring event that honored two amazing scientists, Drs. Peter Hotez and Maria Elena Bottazzi, for their groundbreaking work in vaccine development. The night was made even more memorable with a captivating performance by the talented Vanessa Williams. The event successfully raised $1.7 million to support the Houston Holocaust Museum’s educational programming, emphasizing the importance of fostering a better world for all people.

The Lyndon Baines Johnson Moral Courage Award, presented by the Holocaust Museum Houston, recognizes individuals who have taken a stand against injustice, hatred, and prejudice. This year, the award rightfully honored Drs. Peter Hotez and Maria Elena Bottazzi, Co-Directors of the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children’s Hospital and the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, respectively. These trailblazing researchers have made significant contributions to public health by developing an inexpensive and easily producible COVID-19 vaccine technology, known as CorbevaxTM, which has saved countless lives. Their dedication to providing accessible vaccines to millions of people worldwide truly embodies the spirit of the award.

The evening was made even more special with a performance by Vanessa Williams. She was absolutely phenomenal! Her voice filled the room as she sang some of her most beloved hits like “Love Is,” “Colors of the Wind,” and “The Sweetest Days.” She even paid tribute to the legendary Lena Horne with a powerful rendition of “Stormy Weather.” The energy in the room was electric, especially when she performed “Save the Best for Last” and everyone got up to dance.

What made the event even more meaningful was knowing that the dinner raised a staggering $1.7 million for the museum’s educational programming and general operating funds. It was heartwarming to see so many people coming together to support the museum’s mission of combating injustice and preserving the memory of the Holocaust.

Overall, it was an unforgettable night that celebrated courage, compassion, and the power of standing up against injustice. I left feeling inspired to make a positive impact in my own way!
