February Heart Month is Here and Kicks Off With Wear Red Day This Friday

A new addition this February is the launch of Woman of Impact....Local Nominees Leading the Next Generation of Go Red For Women Ambassadors

Women of Impact

For those of you that know me you know that my true passion in life has been to find a cure for Heart disease, dominant in my family. This is the No. 1 killer of all Americans, specifically looking at women. Through out the month, the American Heart Association’s “Heart to Heart: Why Losing One Woman is Too Many” campaign will raise awareness about the fact that 1 in 3 women are diagnosed with heart disease annually…..that’s a third of our mothers, sisters and friends. On a positive note, what I have learned over my years of being involved with American Heart Association is that unlike I was raised to believe, it is not solely a hereditary issue but can be prevented (80% preventable) through simple things like moving more, eating smart and managing blood pressure. Regular preventative visits to a cardiologist for testing (must know your numbers) encouraged by AHA and some medications have been at the top of my personal priority list.

The facts are there, things are looking better. Since the First National Wear Red Day in 2003, we’ve made tremendous strides in the fight against heart disease and stroke in women. Through education and lifestyle changes, heart mortality rate has decreased nearly 30 percent over the past 10 years and it’s because of more than a few things that this Go Red For Women movement has brought to them.

This year, the federally designated event is even more important due to the impact of coronavirus on the public’s heart health, including potential harmful effects on the heart and vascular system, according to recent research.

About Woman of Impact Platform Sponsor, Stephanie Tsuru and SheSpace: Stephanie Tsuru spent 25 years in the healthcare industry before returning to Rice to get her MLS, which redefined and changed the trajectory of her life. Empowered by the strength and potential of women and frequently disappointed by their circumstances, she founded SheSpace, a female focused work, meeting and programming space designed to support, mentor and unite all women and girls. Drawing on more than 35 years of experience, she brings her wisdom and passion to a space which advances women’s relationships, social and professional networks, through the power of the cohabitation effect. If you have not visited SheSpace, do check it out as I have……amazing concept!
