Rebecca Taylor ’s Spring 2014 Collection from Runways of NY to Fashion Houston

1Rebecca Taylor Brings Spring 2014 NY Fashion Week Collection to Fashion Houston

A Kiwi(had to use the new word, I just learned from this designer),Rebecca Taylor, made her way to America, the day after she graduated fashion school in her native New Zealand. She spent five years working for Cynthia Rowley and then with $600 and a close friend began her company in New York at the age of 26. She was able to sew, a talent she learned from her Mom, buy fabrics in her new hometown of Brooklyn and make a collection that she first sold to a major NY specialty store.

Fast forward 15 years, she is a successful designer whose signature is that she stands for “modern femininity” says the designer and is selling most major specialty/department stores in the country, including Neiman Marcus who sponsored her to be here for Fashion Houston and where we got to sit and have a fun, rockin’ good talk as the music blared and Rebecca seemed to know every tune.

After admiring many of the Fall pieces on the Neiman’s 3rd floor, I asked about her inspiration for Spring.  She chuckled and said that “everything around me is my inspiration and we know that you writers love that so I think many designers, design what they feel and come up with the inspiration after”, which I thought was a hilarious comment!  She seriously said that she saw a beautiful French film last summer on Renoir and felt that did inspire many of her floral prints that she has given a modern twist through techniques such as photo printing and use of higher tech fabrics, staying away from the chiffons.  She obsesses over white, as do I, and she felt there was a lot of white in her collection and we definitely saw that last night….both in her white ground prints and the use of solid white. I loved the white pieces done with silver beading…..casual with a touch of dress up!
